Alvarez named new program coordinator
McMinnville Parks and Recreation has appointed a new Recreation Programs Coordinator.
Rene A. Alvarez received the job after serving as an intern. Former Recreation Programs Coordinator Michael Benusches has been promoted to Facilities Manager.
Alvarez is a McMinnville native who has helped Benusches with events in the past. He is happy to be more involved in the community with the new position.
“I can’t wait to be able to give back to my community,” Alvarez said. “When they told me about this opportunity I was really looking forward to being involved. I’ve been here all my life and over the years I wasn’t too involved but now that I’ve grown and given what we’ve done in the past, I’d really like to be a part of it.
His responsibilities will include coordinating annual events such as the 4th of July Celebration, Trail of Treats, Christmas Parade, Easter Egg Hunt, etc. Alvarez is also working on doing more Movie in the Park events potentially through October.
“I hope my involvement will lead to greater involvement in the community. I would love to see more people participate in our events and hopefully grow our community in the years to come,” said Alvarez.
He plans to bring back ballroom dancing or bingo. Alvarez says that since he’s Hispanic, he’d like to try and incorporate some of that background and culture into the events by potentially including Latin-style dances if they did ballroom and played a Hispanic version. bingo. He says it’s similar to regular bingo, but with cards with symbols on them instead of drawing balls with numbers.
“I just want to involve as many people from all cultures and walks of life because I think it’s important for everyone to have a better understanding of people,” he said.
Alvarez is ready to step up and jump into this new role as Recreation Programs Coordinator.
